Off Track (Primordials Book 1) Kindle Edition
Devastated and exhausted, Eden Lucas is the sole survivor of an unfathomable global catastrophe. As she grapples with the question of whether to go on alone, a train arrives.
It’s not a normal train, that much is clear. For one thing, it’s floating three feet off the ground in a supermarket parking lot. For another, there doesn’t seem to be any place for the driver to go.
Yet it seems to hint at possibilities. Maybe she’s not the only one who was spared. Maybe someone on the train will have answers.
And while she may yet discover what caused the death of her world, nothing can prepare her for just how little she understands about the universe.

About the author

I am a fan of fantasy, science fiction and magic realism, which I tend to combine into my somewhat speculative sci-fi novels. I particularly enjoy the kind of mind-bending stories told by Blake Crouch, N. K. Jemisin, Peter Clines, and Jeff VanderMeer, among others. I love putting normal people in weird situations and seeing how they cope. In my writing, that is. I try not to do it so much in real life.

- Reviewed in Australia on 8 November 2023Verified PurchaseWhat a great concept. I was hooked at the start and can recommend this book for lovers of sci-fi/fantasy. Now to look into the next in the series.
- Reviewed in Australia on 20 July 2022Verified PurchaseLoved it. Not what I was expecting. But what a wild ride. Amazingly real characters, brilliant plot. I'd hate to give any of it away, grab a copy and read it. If you like spooky or dark tales, this one's for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
Verified PurchaseVery good storyline that went in a completely different direction than I first thought. Well written and a lot of twists and turns that keeps the readers interest. Great relatable characters as well. Looking forward to the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars intriguing premise
Verified PurchaseI was attracted to the intriguing premise of this story, and it did not disappoint. One woman is left alone, apparently the only person left alive in the world, then a levitating train appears.
The story had many twists and turns, never obvious in advance, and it was well written with engaging characters.
Although there are two books in the series (and possibly more to follow) this book had a proper and satisfying ending. I enjoyed it enough to buy the second book, and that also did not disappoint. I thoroughly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept - 2D atmosphere
Verified PurchaseThe book starts with an End of the World scenarios by haemorrhagic fever. Unlike Stephen King or Emily St John Mandel, this book felt flat. "Oh dear. Everyone is dissolving." The protagonist didn't exhibit either the adrenalin of trying to survive, or the post trauma fear and anxiety. I felt the first chapters could have been deleted to better effect.
The story moves to a mysterious floating train. Again the protagonist, Eden, is neither inquisitive enough or forceful with the two people already onboard, who are always giving each other meaningful looks. She is just annoyingly accepting.
Further on, the exploration of the train becomes like Myst. The puzzle computer game. Functions or parts of the vehicle become accessible by discovering buttons and panels. A couple more characters appear but are also quite flat.
To me, this felt a bit like a screenplay treatment rather than a novel. I was glad to finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivated from the first page
Verified PurchaseI love SCI FI in general this is by far the best I've read for a while. I was captivated from the first page and the concepts just kept coming. Love Eden as our heroine and the story telling is fantastic, was so good I went straight to book 2 and then book 3 !! I'm hoping there's more to come. Thank you for such a great read
